His father was a former dirty cop, in and out of prison after being convicted of petty thefts throughout his life. After the birth of his sister, Lisa Snart, his mother passed away, leaving them in the care of their abusive father. He was quick to recognise Leonard's intellect and began using him as an accomplice in his crimes. Leo quickly learned to bypass security systems, disable alarms, and squeeze into small places to aide his father. As long as Lewis Snart stayed out of prison, Lisa Snart had food on the table, and that was all Leonard cared about. His father began targeting Lisa with his rage after serving time in prison some time later. This encouraged Leonard to work even harder to keep his father happy, so he wouldn't feel the need to lash out. As a teen, Leonard was caught and arrested in his father's place, and sent to juvie for petty theft. Being scrawny, he was picked on and bullied. After being nearly hospitalised, an older kid took to defending him from the other bullies and protecting him from further targeting. He helped Leonard learn to defend himself and use his smaller size against the larger kids. This was something that stuck with him his entire life. Later in life, his father, Lewis Snart, after being released from prison again, targeted his sister and used her as leverage against Leonard to commit a major robbery. Amidst the chaos of the botched robbery, he killed his father and left his sister in the care of his grandfather. He was never convicted of his father's murder, but had no other life skills, so continued his life of thievery. He constantly checked up on his sister and left her anonymous gifts throughout the years, never missing a birthday or special event in her life. Unlike his father, he chose to rely on skill rather than brute force, which kept casualties to a minimum. He lives with a code and prides himself on his abilities. He has a strong tactical mind and plans ahead, casing joints for weeks before even considering an attempt. Risks are a part of the lifestyle, but he likes to control as many of them as possible. While he will threaten with weapons, he's less likely to actually kill a police officer or innocent bystander. In his mind, if he can't get out of a situation without killing someone, he isn't fit to call himself a thief. After all, just killing your obstacles doesn't show skill, it shows sloppiness. He chooses to overcome obstacles by thinking ten paces ahead. This mentality is what lead to his eventual capture. Incapacitating a tardy security guard rather than killing him ended up alerting the authorities and ruining his entire plan. Cornered and outgunned, he surrendered.
